It s a dream of many providers to move from their family daycare or job into opening their own group daycare. But there are many challenges in opening a. group daycare and the adventure should not be taken lightly.

Group daycare centers are very serious take a great amount of commitment on the part of the owner. Many times I have seen others decide to open their own place and not take into consideration what s really going on. So I ve considered on exposing some of the myth s I ve heard over the years. Setting everyone straight from the beginning will avoid a lot of wasted time and money in the

long run.

Myth #1

When I move from a family daycare to a group daycare all my current parents will follow me. Hold your horse s partner, did you ever talk to any of your parents to find out if they liked the group environment? Many parents distinctly prefer either family or group. You need to find out if they are flexible in leaving your family and want to follow you to group.

Myth#2

Running a group center is not much more expensive then family. Group centers are expensive to run to say the least. A few expenses that are not involved with family but in group include: building cost (rent, insurance), cleaning, higher

utilities, extra employees, equipment, licensing costs, accounting and payroll services, and many others.
AND, don t forget about Uncle Sam he wants a piece of the pie as well.

Myth #3

I work at a group daycare and my daycare parents love me and will follow me where ever I go.

I ve seen this one happen on too many occasions, daycare teachers trying to manipulate parents into doing what they want. Stealing files and addresses and then contacting them outside of hours telling them they are going to open their own daycare. Talk can be very cheap especially in group daycare s where women tend to be very social able and gossip. The fact remains that parents will

want to stay with the established business first.

Lastly, due your research and due diligence. Don t jump into anything before you ve figured out exactly what s it going to cost you. Save yourself the stress in the long run.
